UNDERCUT COASTAL ESTATE IN FTELIA, MYKONOS.
On this particular project, the designers were fortunate enough to undertake the architectural study of a coastal estate with an owner truly in love with the site’s location.
The proposal of an undercut solution (despite its audacity in the timeframe required, because of a rather more complicated construction logic than that of a conventional building) was accepted based on the building’s guaranteed harmonious interaction with the landscape.
Whether this undercut building could live up to the user’s expectations and the basic requirements of adequate lighting and ventilation of individual spaces, as well as humidity isolation and water drainage - was yet to be proven.
The necessary construction solutions challenged the capabilities of the human staff and building materials.
As for the result, after two and a half years of functioning, the undercut solution has delivered more than adequate lighting and ventilation conditions, and despite the complexity of its construction, maintenance levels are comparable to those of any residence.
It should be noted that the entire operation was limited to an extension, as it was not possible to alter either the outline or the elevations of the existing building.
Therefore, the architectural language used was expressed in the interior’s layout and the landscaping of the surrounding areas.
The above limitations did not in the least detract from the so-called joy of creation. Besides, it could be said that the melody hidden in architecture is expressed in notes, predetermined by nature on its musical stave. Their harmonious synthesis will continue to be an eternal human fantasy.
